Over time, grit and dust are embedded so deeply that professional cleaning is essential. We recommend cleaning your rugs every 3-5 years, depending on the traffic it gets. If your rug is placed in a high-traffic area, such as an entry hall, you may want to clean it as often as every year or every other year.

Over-cleaning is not recommended as they remove the natural lanolin oils from the wools which provide resistance to soiling.

High quality wool has these oils which make your rug naturally stain protective. It is important to know that damage can occur with improper cleaning. That is where our expertise comes in.

We recommend rug cleaning be done by our store or other companies focused on handmade area rugs.

The Process:

  1. Inspection: Before washing, the carpet is laid out on the cleaning floor, and thoroughly suction vacuumed, front and back. It is then inspected for soil level, wear and potential stains, country of origin, dye type**, pile fabric and backing material. Direction of the pile is also noted.
  2. Dust Removal: Before washing, the rug is thoroughly vacuumed on both sides to remove loose dirt, dust, and debris. This step helps prevent dirt from becoming mud when the rug gets wet during washing.
  3. Spot Cleaning: Stains and spots are treated individually with appropriate cleaning solutions. It's essential to use mild cleaners that are safe for the rug's fibres and dyes. Harsh chemicals can damage the rug and cause colour bleeding or fading.
  4. Hand Washing or Immersion Cleaning: Handmade rugs are often washed by hand using gentle detergents or soap specifically formulated for wool or silk fibres. Alternatively, with larger rugs and various different types of rugs, they may be immersed in a large wash basin with water and a mild detergent. Care is taken to avoid agitation or scrubbing, as this can damage the fibres.
  5. Rinsing: After washing, the rug is thoroughly rinsed to remove any soap residue. We do this using only clean distilled water (distilled water is pure and doesn't leave residue the way tap water can). It's crucial to rinse the rug thoroughly to prevent detergent buildup, which can attract more dirt over time.
  6. Drying: The rugs are then laid flat to dry in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Hanging a wet rug can cause distortion or stretching of the fibres.
  7. Brushing and Grooming: Once the rug is dry, it may be brushed or groomed to restore its pile and texture. Specialized tools, such as rug combs or brushes, are used to gently fluff the fibres and remove any remaining debris.
  8. Final Inspection: Before returning the rug to its home, a final inspection is conducted to ensure that it's clean, dry, and free from any spots or stains. Any remaining stains may require additional spot treatment and a secondary rinse.

**One of the most essential steps is to test the dyes of the carpet, to ensure no colour bleeding occurs during the washing process. If not done by a proper handmade rug cleaning company, the colours may bleed thus damaging the rug.
